Sextortion: what to do
If someone threatens exposure, what to do first (and what not to do).
Last reviewed: 2026-03-09
If you’re being threatened
- Don’t pay. Paying often increases demands.
- Stop engaging. Don’t negotiate or argue.
- Save evidence: usernames, profiles, messages, payment requests, URLs, screenshots.
- Lock down accounts (change passwords, enable 2FA).
- Report using official channels. Start here: reporting resources.
What not to do
- Don’t install any software “to fix it.”
- Don’t send more personal info or photos.
- Don’t keep chatting “to calm them down.”
If you feel in immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
